Dueling Doctoral Candidates

Yeah. I saw the news from BBC. Gonna miss Mr. Smith.

So.

Idris Elba vs. Helen Mirren.

Anyone?

While I'd be fine with Idris... I suspect he's tied up with LUTHER.

Same reason why no Cumberbatch.

I'd already ruled out Cumberbatch myself.

Same reason for Rick Mercer. Which saddens me somewhat, but I'd hate to lose the Mercer Report. Unless he unilaterally cancels the series in protest of whatever Stephen Harper has up his sleeve next for the CBC.

Obviously Robert Downey Jr., if the talks for Avengers break down and he's forced to walk out.

Unlikely. Both Downey and Disney-Marvel have enough sunk into that by now that they're going to find it difficult to give up on each other.

(Also, things would have to break down terribly quickly for BBC to take advantage, assuming they were interested.)

Oh, I didn't suggest that seriously.

Though Downey's making this a matter of principle, and if Marvel's going to play hardball he may walk. He obviously loves the role, but he's done four movies with it and he's now very wealthy; he has no NEED to keep doing it, and honestly, Marvel really DOES need him to keep that gravy train rolling.

Marvel's being very stupid about this.

Playing hardball with a franchise "anchor" who knows exactly what his place in the situation really is...not a good thing unless you've got really good people ready to step in. And even then, it could backfire on Disney-Marvel.

Mirren would be a blast, and I could see her going for it (although probably only for a short run).

It would be a typically Moffat-y "hide in plain sight" twist to have it turn out to be John Hurt..."Why's everyone so surprised? We said right there on the screen, 'Here's the Doctor'. Duh."

That's my wife's guess. I wouldn't be terribly enthusiastic about that choice, but it would fit Moffat's usual approach.

I still suspect the plan's to fit Hurt between McGann and Ecclestone.

We'll see soon enough either way.
