Home from the Movies...
Dec. 31st, 2016 08:58 pm...and Doctor Strange was as good as I'd hoped it would be. Yes, a tad formulaic, but at times like these days, there's a not-so-strange comfort in that aspect of it. Some good visual nods to Ditko's original design work in the 1960's comics work there. If anyone here has an opinion on the 3D-formatted edition, I'd be glad to read that, good or ill.
I've read on Facebook from several sources that William Christopher AKA Father Francis Mulcahy from M*A*S*H has died. He won't have been the last to die this year, but that hurts a lot of people across the planet anyway, because he and his colleagues on that series helped keep a lot of people from hurting worse than we already were for a couple of decades. Even after the series ended on CBS, because re-runs and later on, tapes and DVDs (and I assume iTunes and the like are keeping the effect going too now).

There's an old quote that's been coming back to mind after reading news and opinion pieces from places ranging from CBC News to iPolitics.ca. It comes from a book about a TV series - one of the earliest examples of what we now call "dramedies" - a portmanteau showing the blending of comedy and drama - on American television that won many Canadian hearts as well.
“I think there is a misconception on the part of a lot of people in this country that Frank Burns is unusual. My hope is that they see he is not unusual. He is fairly ordinary. He comes in sleeker packages, God knows. I hope when people think about who they are going to vote for, or who they’re going to work for, or whatever, they cast an eye toward Frank Burns and say ‘Now, does this person behave the same way? Am I dealing with this kind of monster?.’ Watch for him, be careful of him. There are Frank Burnses everywhere. Learn to know the type. Don’t elect them. Don’t make them chairman of the board. Frank is a dangerous man because he acts without reason, often without true intelligence, and, perhaps more importantly, with no real knowledge or perception of what consequences an action will bring out. He is not a man with perception and, consequently, he is incredibly dangerous.”

Putting that quote into a more recent, Canadian-minded context: I wonder if those who supported Stephen Harper and his fellow believers might not have had a certain dislike for M*A*S*H while it aired in first-run on TV. Certainly, they had problems with CBC, which had the Canadian first-run rights for the series.
(1) Well, the people at Bobbs-Merrill weren't exactly shy about picking a sub-title for promoting that book, were they?

Speaking of starts and stops
Sep. 11th, 2009 08:37 pmI learned from Denis McGrath that Larry Gelbart died today. If you ever saw at least five M*A*S*H episodes in your life, odds are good that at least one of those five will have been co-written by Gelbart.
My comment to Denis?
And so exits a big chunk of my childhood and adolescence. And yet, it's still there, isn't it? Between the DVD sales and the reruns on some channel high up the digital dial, it's still there.
And it helped keep me sane. And it kept me grounded about what to expect as a grown-up. That the bad stuff wasn't going to stop just because I was hitting 18. It would never stop for anyone at all, in fact.
I missed all of that stuff Before M*A*S*H. I know it mattered and matters still to those who can still see it. But you see what's put in front of you. And you work with it as best you can.
