On the Edge of 2023 (Gregorian Calendar)
Dec. 31st, 2022 10:09 pmI feel as if I've said not enough and too much over this past year at the same time. Paradox is permanent. Whether that makes sense or not, it's still true.
I still don't have any ideas as to resolutions for 2023. Not sure that I should, really. Just having them, never mind naming them, seems like tempting fate or God or gods to reach out to break me for that act alone.
Good luck to you all. May we be kind. May we be just. Whether we're sane or not. Whether we prosper or not, although I hope we do that as well. There will be no guarantees of any of this. Still, as some of you have noted, healing the world to whatever degree possible is an obligation upon us all.

Dec. 14th, 2021 08:08 pmIdeas is replaying a defence of nihilism on CBC Radio One as I type this.
Meanwhile, I'm reading Rabble.ca articles.
Tomorrow, I hope to make time to resume work on a commission sketch. The reference materials sent to me for this one have been challenging reading. Somewhat more challenging to print out in a legible fashion.

Continuing the job search this afternoon.
Also: revisiting the history of the Declaration of the Independence of the Mind via Ideas. If you're interested in the text of that original declaration from 1919, here's a link.
(I wonder if Leslie Charteris might have read that Declaration. Some of the stuff in those Saint stories of his gets me thinking now about the possibility. Certainly, if he had, he'd have put it aside for the needs of World War 2 and the battle against fascism as it presented itself to our world back then.)
On a related note: Ideas, the CBC Radio series, is devoting some time over this past broadcast season of 2020-'21 to the theme of The Common Good. Other instalments of that series of broadcasts may be accessed here.
More on other topics as today goes by...

May. 17th, 2020 09:29 amThese facts are not new:
We can't afford to not change. We can use this crisis to leverage positive changes. Some of us are in fact doing that work.
Listening to The Sunday Edition on the radio at the moment, hearing a discussion between Michael Enright and one of those people doing that work at a church-sermon level with the wider public, Charles Taylor.

One thing before I forget...
Dec. 24th, 2017 08:12 pmFor whatever help it gives anyone in my friendlist right now: tomorrow will be the 15th anniversary of my father's death. I still miss him, despite the passage of the years. The day remains the birthday of others whose well-being and wisdom I value. There is a balance in this.
I wish you good tidings, whatever you're celebrating or commemorating.

Two events of note
May. 25th, 2017 05:49 pm1. The seventh game of the playoff series between the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins starts tonight shortly after 8 PM EST.
2. Today is the 40th anniversary of the launch of Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) at the movie theatres.
The phrase "Do, or do not. There is no 'try'" comes to mind, and I expect I'm not alone in that.

Coincidences
Feb. 20th, 2015 04:59 pmThis afternoon, I was at my day-job desk listening to CBC Radio One. First off was Ideas in the Afternoon. A profile on Chris Hedges, specifically, wherein he discusses both in lectures and in discussion with Paul Kennedy the mental health consequences of having been a war correspondent and the ethical consequences of being a citizen of a nation at war.
Following that was Canada Live, featuring Stars' live concert at CBC's Studio 211. Among the songs performed in that session was "Are You OK?"
Go check for the lyrics if you don't already have them at hand.
It may not be the context intended by Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan, but I can't see Campbell not paying attention to the timing if it's ever pointed out to him, accident though it was.

Chris Hadfield on The Agenda, 2013
Jan. 24th, 2015 09:33 pmI'm reminded of something, Douglas Cardinal's comment at the National Gallery a week or so ago about computer tech in particular and how it had freed up his imagination to act and design and build. There is a parallel in those remarks to Col. Hadfield's comments on tech catching up to his ambitions to share his orbital experiences with us here on the ground in as close to real-time as he could.
Any chance of getting those two gentlemen together in one room for a few hours? Any chance at all?

Odd Things: An Ayn Rand Supporter?
Oct. 23rd, 2013 10:30 amWho knew there were such protestors here in Ottawa? Or anywhere else, for that matter.
Rand was the one going on about altruism being a Bad Thing on principle as part of her Objectivism arguments, right?
It occurs to me about jetpacks...
Mar. 28th, 2013 06:08 am...that I'm probably safer living in a world like this one, where such things are very rare and unskilled users aren't crashing themselves into shopping malls, office buildings, apartment towers and so on.
Much safer.
I'd still like to see those permanent settlements on the Moon, Mars and in the L-4 and L-5 points between Earth and the Moon, though.
Smartphones are filed under "nice to have while I wait for the space settlements".

...and possibly how to make it, too.

A good citizen?
Aug. 22nd, 2012 06:17 pmAfter I announced via Facebook my intent to visit Parliament Hill today to join the Layton memorial/anniversary vigil, one of my friendlisters there gave praise: "You're a good citizen."
In honesty?
I'm not even sure that I qualify as a good human being yet, never mind being a good citizen. I'm troubled by any number of personal flaws remembered, whether remembered accurately or not. Some of you have been annoyed personally by those flaws, sometimes more than once. Some people have left my friendlists here and elsewhere as a result.
I'll admit to being a work in progress. There are good days and bad days. Sometimes, there are lukewarm days. Today's one of the lukewarm days. Hoping to do better. To be better.
In the meantime, thanks for your patience, your goodwill and your trust to the degree you've deemed right and proper so far.

The "5 Things" Meme
Jun. 13th, 2012 11:18 pmComment to this post and I will pick five things I would like you to talk about. They might make sense or be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.
The list I was given by
ms_danson is as follows:
( What do you want to be famous for, mapping, ice cream, new vs comfortable, the look of the prairies )
