Our warped galaxy
Feb. 5th, 2019 10:17 pmI wanted to remember to discuss some of the news about the process of mapping out our galaxy, and the recent discovery that the Milky Way is warped like you might have once done to a vinyl LP. There's a nice little animation that goes some ways in explaining the discovery on YouTube somewhere, but I don't have time to track all the links I'd like to tonight.
More sleep needed, you see.
Talk to you later...

Voting and Sleep
May. 28th, 2018 05:51 amOn Saturday after supper, I went to the advance polling station and marked my 'x' next to the candidate-party combination that seems most helpful for my riding.
The next morning, I woke up at 930 AM.
At least an hour and a half later than normal. I haven't been able to sleep that late on a Sunday in years.
It felt refreshing. And while I'm not sure the two events are connected, I'm not ruling it out either.

Random Notes of Interest
Nov. 4th, 2014 09:21 pmRandom stuff is random.
I don't work nights, but I do wonder about similar consequences resulting from other ways of achieving lack of sleep.
There's a project in Toronto devoted to rethinking Toronto's history and culture...through its street names. It's got me wondering about Ottawa now.
Re: Alternative maps of Canada...the Huffington Post noticed something of interest happening on Reddit devoted to that subject. What changes would you make to our national map if you were of a mind?

Some random stuff
Apr. 27th, 2014 12:20 pmI slept close to eight hours overnight. I had three instances of waking up at unwanted moments, and as expected, it was a struggle to resume the sleep. When I'm working days, I manage maybe six or seven hours at best. It's not a good thing, but it's what I have to work with.
I just bought a one-day ticket for the Comiccon at the Ernst and Young Centre. Saturday. No idea if I'll be able to say "hi" to anyone I know while I'm there. It's my expectation that I'll likely blow through my budget for the day in the dealers' room within 20 minutes, see whoever I can within the hour and then retreat to the nearest bus stop to head for either home or downtown. Whichever makes sense at the time, one supposes.
Also, I can completely forget about budgeting for any actors' autographs. It's one of those "nice to have but not really worth the time spent in line or money" things. I'd once had hopes of getting Jewel Staite's autograph on my Da Vinci's Inquest first season DVD set packaging, but that's fallen by the wayside. Not going to happen, not with any actor whose work I respect enough to consider trying for.
Worrying a little more about my computer lately. The random noises from MacBook Pro's optical drive (AKA the CD/DVD-player/burner) are quieting down of late, but the worry's still there. Also, wondering about the heat sinks or fans. Maybe both.
More on other stuff as the day wears on, hopefully...

Sundries on the Road to Confederation Day
Jun. 26th, 2006 08:43 pmYeah, I know. I call it "Canada Day" too as a rule, and I grew up too late to keep the Monarchist League and their friends happy on the subject. But, I figure if there's ever a push for yet another name change to the National B-Day's Official Name(and if we last long enough as a nation, I know that there's going to be at least one such change), this is what I want to settle for.
Speaking of preserving Good and Ancient Things: I was listening to Ontario Today on CBC Radio One, and happened to overhear an interview of Oakville Town Councillor Allen Elgar about a Great White Oak located in the Halton Region. This tree's been around for at least a century before Confederation was kicked off in that triple-conference led by Sir John A. and his gang of cronies and rivals.
Councillor Elgar and his allies are looking to do some fundraising to save this Oak from the roadbuilders' axes, according to the weblinks I've added. It strikes me that this might be something worth helping out with.
Comics Progress Note: Still working on pages for Local Hero. Finished inking and digital compositing yesterday on one page, and hoping to wrap up another tonight before bed. This page is the one before the one I excerpted a couple of days ago in my mock complaint about comic-book lizard-men. (More on "Gator" Jones in due course, I promise.)
And speaking of beds...
I've Got a Question on Sleep: Some bright soul, I forget exactly whom, pointed out on the front page of the National Post today that a lot of the world's past and present Movers and Shakers are what they are now because they manage to forgo your normal 6-to-8 hours a night.
What are these people thinking, viewing sleep as an impediment and a crutch?
Just nosy is all. :-)
