New annoyance that I've been dreading. I've only had this machine running MacOS 10.13.x for about a year. Gifted by a friend from my Mac user group. Now this news re: one of my favourite pieces of software:

December 6, 2020 Meeting Information

For December’s meeting will be full of great stuff! Marc will talk about CIRA DNS and their other offerings, Dave will demo how he uses NetNewsWire, Tom will show how he manages Photos and Family data, then we’ll talk about the new Mac mini, MacBook Air, and 13” MacBook Pro, the M1 chip, Big Sur, Hazel 5, and Pixelmator Pro 2.

We will also try to answer any other iOS/Mac-related questions as best as we can.
The meeting takes place on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at 1 p.m. and we will send the link & instructions out via the mailing list about fifteen minutes before 1pm on Sunday.

Numbers '08 has crashed three times on me today. I'd like to update to something more compatible with High Sierra but the App Store isn't carrying that version. If there's a legal fix for the issue, I'd be glad to know of it. Will keep looking.

(And I just found out: Keynote crashes whenever I try to launch it.)

And my address book files imported successfully into Contacts...but have since been reduced to two contacts. Not sure how that happened, and not happy about it.

My MacBook Pro was developing weird symptoms after I swapped in my new modem yesterday, so it became a necessity to get the file migration to the new iMac underway. A couple of false starts, but everything seems to be getting into proper order now. A few updates to some software, others look to be useless now, which is all normal enough. But the file migration took all day and most of the night yesterday into way early this morning. So I've lost a full day's job search activity.

Back now, though.

I think that, from now on, if I get a request for a one-way video interview via SparkHire, I am going to e-mail the prospective employer seeking that and say "thanks, but no thanks, I am withdrawing my application". Two prospective employers have asked this of me so far, and it would be best if there weren't a third.

It's not that I don't want a good-fitting job. I do. But my hardware-software mixture at home seems bent on ensuring that I can't use SparkHire as the prospective employers would like me to.

My apologies for this.

Cleaning up some iPhoto archives tonight after re-watching Star Trek: Discovery.

Yes, I know that Apple's moved on to Photos now. I have a machine with that software loaded up. I seem to recall some issues with maintaining control over the photos I've taken and dumped from my cameras into my MacBook Pro over the years, so I'm leaving the archive in said MBP for now. If I'm remembering incorrectly, please explain what mistake I've made.

Also, I still want to upgrade the RAM and hard drive on the slightly newer MacBook-that-isn't-Pro before I move said picture archives to that machine. I've been advised by several friends in my User Group to want to switch that machine from HD to SSD, but I'm (still) skeptical about the value of the trade-offs there.

I can't afford to buy the newest gear every couple of years, and Apple management's not making it easier for me with their growing desire to minimize the ability of owners to customize our gear once we buy it.

I currently own and use a Hewlett-Packard-made scanner-printer device. I didn't buy into such plans as described in the article by Cory Doctorow, but it is programmed to complain to me every time I use a refilled ink cartridge. I find that obnoxious enough as it is.

This is worse.

If Hewlett-Packard wants me to keep buying their scanner-printer devices when my current machine "dies", it would go well for them to cease and desist in the practices Mr. Doctorow describes here.

Permanently.

(And is this happening in Canada, and whom do we speak with at which level(s) of government if it is?)
